I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;

I will tell of all your wonders, I will be glad and rejoice in you;

I will sing praises to your name, O Most High.

                                                   Psalm 9: 1-2

*The Opening Hymn #629                                                                 God of Our Fathers

The Scripture Lesson                              Luke 23: 33-43

When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals – one on his right, the other on his left.  Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”  And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.  They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”  The soldiers also came up and mocked him.  They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

There was written notice above him, which read:  This is the King of the Jews.  One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ?  Save yourself and us!”  But the other criminal rebuked him, “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence?  We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds, deserve.  But this man has done nothing wrong.”  Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”  Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Benediction   -  Psalm 116

“I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.  Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.  Then I called on the name of the Lord:

“O Lord, save me!”  The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.  The Lord protects the simple hearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.

Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.  For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the Lord in the land of the living.”

Thanks Be to God, Amen.
