The Communicator

Volume 16, Issue 10                                                            October, 2009

From the Pastor

Congratulations to the choir for their presentation of “Shoutin Time” Sunday night.  I have heard reports that it was an incredible time of meaningful fun and fellowship.  We are blessed to have the best music leadership possible. (Even if Mr. Tinsley has a funky stone producing gall bladder).  Thanks to the choir for the leadership in music, worship and fellowship you provide on an on going basis for the church family.

September 30, Diane Smith from the Virginia Baptist Resource Center will be our guest to talk with us about children’s ministry.  Dianne is well respected across the convention for her expertise and commitment to spiritual care for children.  Please be a part of this program next Wednesday.  We have some unique challenges and thankfully we have some new opportunities in shaping the lives of children who are a part of Skipwith.

An ordination service is scheduled for April Sledge October 4, 2009 in the sanctuary at 5:00 pm.  April has been on our staff two years come December.  She has worked in three areas covering a wide range of ages and interests.  Children, youth, and young adults are stronger in our church because of her work.  She has been faithful, open to learning about us, and determined to minister even through three knee surgeries and other medical tests.  Most importantly, she has displayed the necessary spiritual temperament a church looks for in a true minister.  I hope you will come and be an encouraging presence to this young minister at her ordination.

Recently Cheryl and I returned to the first church in Atlanta where I served in 1972-73.  I was humbled to see what God has done through the church and to meet people whom I have had a chance to spiritually influence.  I miss being with the Skipwith family on Sundays when I am gone and yet I have a peace that God is using these experiences in a continuing journey of faith for me and this fine congregation.

Yours in Christ,

Cecil

Saturday October 24

10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Come and join us for our Fall Festival and Community Day!  This will be a day of fellowship, fun and a chance to meet the people in our community.  There will be a petting zoo, food, cotton candy, games, cake walk, face painting, pumpkin carving, music, fire trucks, and other people from the community !!!  Bring the whole family and invite all your friends!  All are welcome!

Anyone interested in helping with the event let April Sledge know and come to our next planning meeting October 6 at 7 o’clock.  This is going to be a great event and a great opportunity to connect with the community.

From Our Music Director

WOW,WOW,WOW!!!  Thank you to everyone who invited a friend to “Shoutin Time at  Skipwith”  We had a VERY healthy crowd of 210 members/guests and 24 choir members.  What a great evening of fun, fellowship and gospel music!  Thank you to all who helped with the ice cream social and those who helped put out additional chairs.  I’m sure Cecil will have the last laugh, but we sure did have some fun at his expense … you know when the “preacher’s away – the congregation gets to play !!!  Again, thank you for being such a supportive church of our music  program.  We have WONDERFUL choir members who are always willing to try new things .. and that makes it fun.  Just a reminder… we would love to have you come and join us for our Christmas music.  We start this special music at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday nights.  Come join us!
