The Pastor’s Corner

The summer has gone by with record heat and seemingly increasing speed.  We have experienced a good summer at Skipwith Baptist Church.  The attendance has been good and the spirit of the church friendly and warm.  We have a good number of people coming to visit with us for worship.

The fall season will soon be here.  We are celebrating with a 2010 version of “Shoutin Time” on Sunday evening September 19th at 6:00 pm.  Make plans to bring a friend and let’s laugh and have some fun together.

The Wonderful World of Wednesdays begins on September 8th at 6:00 pm.  Please make reservations on the sign up sheet in the hallway.  Let’s have a great season of Wednesday Get Togethers.

A called business meeting to hear a report from the Financial Task Force is set for Wednesday October 6th.  The church will hear recommendations from the taskforce regarding the church budget, expenses, and directions for the future.

Essential of Christian Growth Small Group Study begins in October.  This study is an eight week study led by Janet Griffin during the Sunday School hour on Sundays.  The study will have a workbook and will feature a lot of class discussion among the participants.  See Janet Griffin or the pastor for more details.

From Our Minister of Children, Youth and Young Adults

It is time… back to school!  I was thinking about the things students and parents do to prepare for the start of a new school year ----- - buying new clothes, searching for the right school supplies, meeting new teachers, getting schedules arranged, getting used to waking up early again, being introduced to the expectations of a new grade, figuring out the bus times, and many other tasks that leave us excited about a fresh start or counting the days till Christmas break!  Either way, the first day of the new school year comes whether we are ready or not.

It made me think about how we prepare or anticipate our time spent with God.  Do we prepare or rush through to get to the next thing?  God comes and speaks to us regardless of our preferred timeline!  I encourage you to be intentional about your time of devotion and prayer.  Get excited about it!  I have found that even a moment in the presence of God is like a fresh start to every day,  all year around!

To students and parents be energized about the achievements to come in this new school year, and to everyone, allow God to help you prepare, to teach you, and to give you a spirit of renewal!  Peace to you all!

Wonderful Wednesday Dinners Served

Beginning Wednesday, September 8th we will once again have dinner at church on Wednesday evenings at 6 o’clock.  You will need to make reservations no later than 12:00 noon on Monday each week. The caterer will be given the number of meals to prepare at 12 on Monday and no changes can be made after that.  We hope that you can join the church family for this fellowship meal each Wednesday.  We have a good time!

The dinner will be catered by Cuisines Catering.

We have been offered a meal for $7.00 per plate.  This includes an entrée, two sides and dessert; the church provides the beverage.  If you do not prefer dessert the cost will be $6.00 per plate.  We are sorry that we cannot offer family discounts this year.

Please remember that for this price, a catered meal will not have the large portions of food that Barbara Bliley gave us when she prepared meals and there can be no second servings.  If you make a reservation you will be responsible for the cost of the meal whether you come or  not.

Come!  you will enjoy the good food and the fellowship is top quality.

Women on Mission

After a summer break our ladies will begin meeting again each second Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. for mission study and prayer.  This group participates in special mission projects each month throughout the year.  We prepare lunches for VCU  and UR students, or for kids in one of the Baptist centers.  We collect food, paper products, school supplies, Christmas gifts, clothes for our Baptist centers.  For some of these activities we have asked you, our church family, to help us and you have been most generous.  We thank you.

We encourage all ladies of the church to come to our meetings and participate in these mission opportunities.   “It’s a good time feeling”!

Happy Birthday

The Financial Corner

Thanks to a generous gift for our lawn care account of $6,500.00,  we will not have to worry about paying that bill for awhile!!  Now please make lots of generous donations to our checking account to help pay the other bills!  I hope we all understand that gifts and designations come after we have tithed a tenth of our income or resources so that we can take care of the business of running our church.  We do appreciate all that our members do.

July Expenses:      $21,003.87

Oh What We Learn from Kids!

A Sunday school teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible – Psalm 23.  She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.  Little Rick was excited about the task – but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm.  After much practice, he could barely get past the first line.

On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Rick was so nervous.  When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, “The Lord is my shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.”

Go to the Shepherd!

“Something happens in the presence of the shepherd that happens nowhere else.”

Senior Lunch in September

A lunch for all seniors will be served in the Wright Fellowship Hall on Tuesday, September 14th at 12:30 pm.  Reservations should be made by calling the church office or signing the list posted on the back hall bulletin board.  The menu:  Meatloaf, Herb Potatoes, String Beans, Sunshine Salad, Cookies/Jello.  The cost: $5.00.

Church Library News

Work continues on the library.  We have just received the new library managing program that will allow us to have a computer data base for all books in our library.  This will also make it easier to catalog books and to print out any forms or labels needed to manage the library.

Speaking of using the computers there will also be an e-mail address for the library.  This will be posted soon and we look forward to receiving your messages.

God Won’t Ask!

God won’t ask what kind of car you drove. He’ll ask how many people you drove who didn’t have transportation.

God won’t ask the square footage of your house,

He’ll ask how many people you welcomed into your home.

God won’t ask about the clothes you had in your closet, He’ll ask how many you helped to clothe.

God won’t ask what your highest salary was.  He’ll ask if your compromised your character to obtain it.

God won’t ask what your job title was.  He’ll ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.

God won’t ask how many friends you had.  He’ll ask how many people to whom you were a friend.

God won’t ask in what neighborhood you lived. He’ll ask how you treated your neighbors.

God won’t ask about the color of your skin, He’ll ask about the content of your character.

God won’t ask why it took you so long to seek salvation.  He’ll lovingly take you to your mansion in heaven, and not to the gates of Hell.

“It’s “Shout’in Time…”

The old Greyhound bus is pulling back into the parking lot at Skipwith Baptist on Sunday evening, September 19th at 6:00 pm!  Come early to get a good seat… or you may be a “feature” in one of our homespun stories!  We’ll be singing some old southern favorites and we’ll be “learning you some new ones!”  Following the music and fun we’ll all help ourselves to a “sundae” to end a great “Sunday!”

We need some help with the “fix’ins.”  This Sunday, there will be a sign up sheet asking all you cousins to help with whipped cream, strawberry, chocolate, cherry, and pineapple toppings, and don’t forget the ‘nannas and nuts (you know we love the wet ones!)  If you think you can help us out, please sign up and bring your fix’ins to the church by September 12th.

Bring a friend and have a good time… you’ll hear some great music, laugh a little (or a lot), and go home full… in your belly and in your soul!

Rick
